Chapter 9

I woke up bright and early the next morning. Just kidding, I didn’t wake up until noon. I’d forgotten to set my alarm and it’s not like I wanted to go to work anyway. I stumbled out of bed and showered then headed to the cafeteria to get some food. It was too late for breakfast, but I was able to get some lunch in me. I took my time eating when all of a sudden I remembered my meeting with Ms. Jane. She wanted me in her office at 1 P.M. sharp, and it was already 1 P.M. I jumped up and threw my trash into the bin before heading to her office.

I looked at the door and frowned. This was not how I wanted to spend my time. I knocked on the door and Norman opened it. Great. The guy who tried to kidnap us for experiments.

“Ms. Jane wanted to see me,” I said, not even bothering to hide the disgust in my voice.

Norman opened the door wider and Ms. Jane caught sight of me. “Oh, good, Ben. You’re here. Come in. You can go, Norman.”

Norman left, making sure to bump me slightly as I walked in. What a tool. Ms. Jane motioned to sit down in the chair across from her and I did so, walking as slow as I could while shuffling my feet. Ms. Jane just stared at me until I was seated.

“Let’s get straight to the point,” she said. “You broke your contract.”

“Huh?” I said.

“The contract. You signed it when you first came here.”

“Uh. What did it say again?”

Ms. Jane sighed and pulled a sheet of paper out of a folder. I looked closer and the tab said “Weeks, Ben” on it. She handed me the paper and I glanced at it.

“Oh, yeah, I did sign this.”

Ms. Jane rubbed her temples. “Yes. You did. You broke it by leaving Bunker 3 without my direct orders.”

“I mean, Norman was trying to kill me. Doesn’t that violate the contract?”

“Norman’s a different circumstance. Also, he’s being punished for his little stunt,” she said.

“Yeah, right.”

Ms. Jane rubbed her temples again. “The fact of the matter is that you violated the contract and now you’ll have to deal with the consequences.”

“I’m stuck here with no internet. What could be worse?”

Ms. Jane took a deep breath a few times before answering. “You have two options. Every Friday, you will either work with the Sanitation Department or the Library.”

“That doesn’t sound so bad,” I said. “It says a punishment could be death.”

Ms. Jane started to laugh but turned it into a cough and she covered her mouth. “Yes, it’s not death. You’ll talk to the heads of each department and they’ll give you their tasks. You’ll also need to keep track of your hours and they’ll sign a sheet for me at the end.”

I refrained from rolling my eyes. It almost broke my eye muscles, but I did it. It sounded like I was being babysat. “Sounds good.”

Ms. Jane sat back in her chair.
